WHAT'S A DISCOVERY DATING CLASS LIKE?

Although we never teach every course exactly the same way, we do follow the outline below. Our classes can take place anywhere around the world as needed. So far our classes have primarily been held at the Oneida Nation Elementary School and Menominee Tribal School, although we have traveled for classes through Oneida Social Services, Taycheedah Women Prison, Lombardi Middle School, Green Bay Southwest High School, Beloit Youth Connections, and other locations.

A typical Discovery Dating course is 16 hours long and can be arranged in a variety of ways such as 16 one-hour sessions, 8 two-hour sessions, 4 four hours sessions and more. Other time arrangements can be made if your needs call for the course to be shorter or longer on time. For evaluation purposes, a pre-test is administered as the very first activity before any discussion of Discovery Dating occurs. And, as the final activity in the course, the students take a post-test. Our goal is to find any behavior or belief changes that have taken place with the students in the class.

GENERAL OUTLINE OF DISCOVERY DATING^© COURSE (8 weeks, 2 hour classes)

Session 1:

Introduction to Discovery Dating - creation, diary sheets, pyramid, key cards; Building a Relationship; Dreams & Goals Charts; My Ideal Island Activity

Session 2:

Temporary vs Permanent Life Choices; Pitfalls & Benefits of Relationship Choices; Feelings & Opportunities vs Facts & Information, Monogamy

Session 3:

Exploring the Key Cards, Considering My Values, Self Diary Sheet

Session 4:

The Importance of a Mentor, Good Mentor Qualities, Communication skills, Key Encounters

Session 5:

Diary sheet on fellow student, Diary sheet on one person outside of the class, Virtual Date activity

Session 6:

Role Plays using Discovery Dating Script dates, Murray Activity, Refusal Skills, Tied Together Activity

Session 7:

Self Sufficiency Skills, Decision Making Skills

Session 8:

Circle Talk on Intimate Issues

…anything can happen! Well, not really. Instructors are given the teacher's manual which includes a syllabus and lesson plans as well as lists of additional resources. Wise Women Gathering Place believes that Discovery Dating is a truly universal tool and can be custom-fit to any community without losing the important information along the way. Some communities have adapted Discovery Dating to their specific situations and created something that is presented differently but still follows the core of Discovery Dating. We encourage this. We love positive creative energy being applied to our workbook. So, even if you think this would never work for your organization, we challenge you to prove us wrong!
